Alison is happiest when working with words. Evident since childhood, her intuitive interest in language has developed into a mature and intelligent skillset that is client-focused and effective. As a copywriter, Alison is known for her high-level knowledge and abilities that enable her to offer insights and solutions that help professionals who offer complex financial products and services to develop marketing communications that resonate with their clients. A bright, friendly and dedicated professional, particularly when the focus is to help Bold! clients create marketing communications that are concise, relevant and engaging.
Alison has held leadership positions in software development, instructional design and education. Her career began at IBM UK where she was responsible for finding and fixing ‘bugs’ in a leading international software product. After moving to Australia, she researched computer-based language learning at Bond University before moving to Queensland University of Technology where she later headed up the interface design team for Australia’s first proprietary online education system.
As a teacher and Head of Department at Queensland high schools, Alison developed reporting systems for students with special needs that were later circulated to regional education offices throughout the state as the recommended standard. Her thoughtful approach to teaching and genuine concern for young people led to the development of practical and solution-focussed communication strategies that were effective both inside and outside the classroom.
Alison has honed her written communication skills over many years. Her extensive hands-on experience as a writer, editor, proofreader, teacher and researcher, and her work in print and online media in academic, business and community contexts, have earned her respect and an outstanding reputation both professionally and personally.
At Bold!, Alison uses her communication skills and business knowledge to support business owners in developing their marketing communications and related text-based material, print and online. In addition to her linguistic ability, she offers a compassionate, understanding and incisive eye in developing or editing effective strategies and copy in marketing communications.
Alison holds a First Class BA(Hons), a Master of Education (with a grade point average of 6.75) and a Graduate BEd, as well as an A-pass Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults (TOEFLA). She speaks fluent French, reasonable German and classroom Spanish. Her natural flair for language and ongoing interest in literature and historical linguistics help explain her extensive vocabulary and nuanced appreciation of how to write effectively.
Alison has excelled in state, national and international representative sport including equestrian for Singapore, age-group swimming for Queensland Masters and triathlon. She was British champion in the 1991 World Triathlon Championships, held on the Gold Coast. Her commitment, determination, and sheer stamina are as evident in her professional achievements as they are when she is swimming, cycling or running. More recently, she has developed rather more spiritual interests including mindfulness practices to find balance amid the busy-ness of modern life. Also to this end, she and Gypsy, a black Labrador rehomed from Queensland Guide Dogs, spend lots of time swimming and walking at the beach.
Alison’s strong community focus has led to consistent involvement in community activities including teaching English to refugees and migrants with CARE Australia, volunteering in permaculture gardens, and as secretary of sporting clubs including the New Zealand Triathlon Association and Queensland Masters Swimming.
In the years ahead, Alison plans to spend time walking the historic public pathways of regional Great Britain between B&B stays in the cathedral cities. Back in Australia, she is investigating ‘tiny houses’.
At Bold! Alison is committed to supporting clients as they establish the habit of effective marketing communication. She enjoys working in a quiet environment as a member of a warm and dedicated team: drafting, editing and helping clients understand that a well-designed marketing communications strategy is not only achievable but rewarding.
